'a'ã (ah AH): lava that has a clinkery, or rough and jumbled, surface.

calabash (kal ah bash): a container made from a hollowed-out gourd.

Hina (HEE nah): a Polynesian goddess considered to be a primary ancestor of the Hawaiian people. In Hawaiian mythology, Hina is often associated with the moon and its cycles, and therefore with fishing, planting, and fertility.

Kahiki (kah HEE kee): Tahiti, an island in French Polynesia, about 2,800 miles southeast of Hawai'i.

Kahikihonuakele (kah HEE kee hoh noo ah KEH leh): a land under the sea.

Kamohoali'i (kah moh hoh ah LEE ee): Pele's older brother, the shark god.

kapa (KAH pah): cloth made from bark.

Kilauea (KEE lau ay ah): a volcano on the island of Hawai'i.

Kipapa (KEE pah pah): Hina's younger brother.

Konikonia (koh nee koh NEE ah): a chief of Hilo, Hawai'i.

Lõ'ihi (LOH ee hee): a seamount forming off the southeast coast of the island of Hawai'i.

Nãmakaokaha'i (NAH mah kah oh kah hah ee): Pele's older sister, the sea goddess.

pãhoehoe (PAH hoy hoy): lava that has a smooth or ropy surface.

pãoa (PAH oh ah): Pele's digging stick.

Pele (PEH leh): If you don't know who Pele is, then you better get the book!

Waimea (wye MAY ah) Bay: a bay on the North Shore of O'ahu; the bay in southwest Kaua'i where Captain Cook first landed.
