Michael
was born July 30, 1966 in Ogden,
Utah. He was six weeks premature
and weighed a whopping 4 pounds 13 ounces. He says he must have
been really excited to get here, although he had to stay in the hospital
until he weighed 5 pounds. It took 14 days for him to gain 3 ounces.
His earliest memory is throwing up in the incubator and feeling terrible
while a nurse cleaned him up when he was two and a half.
Michael has always been a messy child. He would swim in the
duck's wadding pool, play in the mud, and dig large holes in the back
yard and fill them with water. For him, mud and dirt are a way
of life. He now enjoys mountain biking, hiking and camping.
He grows lots of plants and especially likes to canoe. (Ironically,
he hated being in the Boy Scouts.)
Art has also been a large part of Mike's life. He earned a Bachelor's
Degree in Three Dimensional Art from Weber
State University where he was recognized as the Outstanding Art
Graduate in Three Dimensional Design (1992). His art work is
a mix of colors & patterns and is highly influenced by nature
as well as art history. He also earned a minor in Anthropology,
and is committed to preserving mythological stories for future generations.
Being active in the Salt Lake community, Mike has served on the advisory
committee for Tracy Aviary.
He has helped plan and execute Aviary events and fund raising programs. In
the past, he has also volunteered for Ballet
West, Utah Opera, the
East Liberty Park Community Council,
and the Children's Museum of
Utah. In 1996 Mike received the W. Lee Burge Community Service
Award.
Today, Mike is an Associate Librarian and serves as the Volunteer
Coordinator for Salt Lake
City Public Library. With the completion of the city's new
$85 million main branch facility, in January 2003, Mike is overseeing about
290 volunteers and is very busy. Before construction on the
new building began, Mike served on a panel which worked with the four
architectural teams selected as finalists for the project. He
says it was an exciting and memorable experience.
He adds it's nice to see the building complete. He is confident that
it's the finest public library in the country! |
